In ancient times in a fishing village of Air Manis Beach in the Padang area, West Sumatra, there lived a widow named Mande Rubayah with a son named Malin Kundang. Mande Rubayah was very fond and spoiled Malin Kundang. Malin is a diligent and obedient child.

Mande Rubayah is old, she is only able to work as a cake seller to cover the needs of her and her only child. One day, Malin fell ill. Very hard, his life almost floated but eventually he could be saved - thanks to his mother's hard work. After recovering from his illness he was increasingly loved. They are mothers and children who love each other. Now, Malin has grown up asking permission from his mother to go to the city, because at that time there was a large ship docked at Air Manis Beach.

"Don't Malin, I'm afraid something will happen to you in the land of Rantau there. Just stay here, accompany mom, "said her mother sadly after hearing Malin's wish to migrate.

"Mom calm down, nothing will happen to me," Malin said, holding his mother's hand. "This is a chance, Mom, because it is not necessarily once a year a big ship docked on this beach. I want to change our destiny, Mom, please, "Malin begged.

"Okay, you allow it. Hurry back, mom will always be waiting for you son, "said his mother crying. Even though he was reluctant, finally Mande Rubayah allowed his son to leave. Then Malin was provided with seven packets of rice wrapped in banana leaves, "For your provisions on the trip," he said, handing him over to Malin. After that, Malin Kundang went to the Overseas Land leaving his mother alone.

Some time later if there is a ship that comes close he always asks how about his son. "Did you see my son, Malin? Is he okay? When will he go home? " But every time he asked the crew or the captain, he never got an answer. Malin never left any items or messages to his mother.

For years Mande Rubayah kept asking, but there was never an answer until her body grew older, now she began to stoop down. One day Mande Rubayah got word from the former skipper carrying Malin, the captain gave happy news to Mande Rubayah.

"Mande, do you know, your child is now married to a beautiful girl, the daughter of a noble who is very rich," he said at that time.

"Malin hurry home here, mother, old Malin, when you go home ..." he moaned sorrowfully every night. He was sure his son would come. Sure enough, not long after, on a sunny day from a distance, a magnificent and beautiful ship sailed towards the beach.

The villagers gather, they think the ship belongs to a sultan or a prince. They welcomed him happily. Mande Rubayah was very happy to hear that, he always prayed that his son would be safe and immediately return to visit him, a ray of joy began to come back to him. But for months since he received the news Malin from the captain, Malin did not come back to see him.

When the boat began to dock, a pair of young people stood on the bridge. Their clothes are exposed to the sun. Their faces were brightly decorated with smiles because they were happily welcomed.

Mande Rubayah also crowded close to the ship. His heart pounded hard when he saw the young man who was on the ship, he was very sure that the young man was his son, Malin Kundang. The village elders had not had time to welcome, Mrs. Malin first approached Malin. He immediately hugged him tightly, he was afraid of losing his son again.

"Malin, my child. You're right, my child, right? "He said, holding back sobs with joy," Why haven't you told me for so long? "

Malin was surprised because he was embraced by the frail old woman who was dressed in rags. He did not believe that the woman was his mother. Before he could think of speaking, his beautiful wife spat while saying, "This ugly woman is your mother? Why did you lie to me first! "He said sarcastically," Didn't you say that your mother was a noble who is equal to me ?! "

Hearing his wife's scathing words, Malin Kundang immediately pushed his mother to the ground, "Crazy woman! I'm not your child! "He said harshly.

Mande Rubayah did not believe in her son's behavior, he fell down while saying, "Malin, Malin, my child. I'm your mother, son! Why are you being like this, kid ?! ”Malin Kundang ignored his mother's words. He will not recognize his mother. He was ashamed of his wife. Seeing the woman inching to hug her legs, Malin kicked her while saying, "Hi, crazy woman! My mother is not like you! Poor and dirty! "The old woman lay in the sand, crying, and hurt.

The people who looked at him were stunned and then returned to their homes. Mande Rubayah fainted and lay alone. When he realized, Air Manis Beach was deserted. He saw Malin's ship farther away. He did not expect Malin who had been loved to do so.

His heart was sore and sore, then his hand was raised to the sky. He then prayed with a sad heart, "Yes, Lord, if indeed he is not my child, I forgive his actions earlier. But if he really is my son named Malin Kundang, I beg for your justice, my God! "He said heartily while crying. Shortly after the weather in the middle of the sea that had been bright, suddenly turned dark. The rain suddenly dropped with great depth.

Suddenly a big storm came, hit the ship Malin Kundang. After a thunderous bolt of lightning. At that moment the ship was shattered. Then carried by the waves to the beach.

The next day when the morning sun appeared on the eastern horizon, the storm had subsided. At the foot of the hill saw a ship that had become stone. That's the ship Malin Kundang! Looks like a stone that resembles a human body.

That is the body of Malin Kundang the son of disobedience who was hit by the curse of his mother to become a stone because it was lawless. Between the rocks swimming anchovy, mullet and mackerel fish. That said, the fish came from the body's fragments of his wife who kept looking for Malin Kundang.

Until now if there were large waves hitting the rocks that resembled ships and humans, there was a sound like howls of human scream, sometimes it sounded like people wailing regretting themselves, "Forgive, Mom ...! Forgive me! ”Said that was the voice of Malin Kundang, a child who was disobedient to his mother.
